Writing better prompts (tips & examples)

The way you describe a widget has a big effect on the result. These tips help you get what you want faster.

The golden rules

  1. Be specific. Mention colors, sizes, text, and behavior.

  2. Iterate in small steps. Make one change per message.

  3. Describe the outcome, not the code. Say what you want it to do or look like — the AI handles the how.

Example of a clear prompt and its result

Do this

  • “A countdown timer to December 31, 2025, with large white numbers on a dark card.”

  • “A rounded call-to-action button that says ‘Get Started’ and rains confetti when clicked.”

  • ✅ Then refine: “Make the button purple.”“Now make it a bit bigger.”

Avoid this

  • “Make me something cool.” (too vague — you’ll get an unpredictable result)

  • ❌ Cramming ten changes into one long message.

  • ❌ Asking for features it can’t build, like saving form entries (see What it can & can’t build).

Refining language that works well

You want to…

Try saying…

Change a color

“Make it purple” / “Use my brand blue”

Resize

“Make it bigger” / “Make the text smaller”

Adjust spacing

“Add more padding” / “Center it”

Add style

“Add rounded corners and a soft shadow”

Change content

“Change the heading to ‘Welcome’”

Change timing

“Count down to July 1 instead”
